PETALING JAYA: A senior PKR leader was caught by the Pahang Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) for allegedly committing khalwat (close proximity) with a married woman early this morning.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at a popular hotel in Balok, Kuantan. The PKR leadership is holding a retreat at the hotel since Friday.
Several PKR leaders contacted by FMT confirmed that Jaip had raided the hotel at about 2.30am this morning and had caught the leader committing the offence. Jaip is expected to charge him and the woman in the coming weeks.
The leader could not be contacted for comment. His handphone has been switched off since the news first broke in the cyberspace. He and the woman have been named in several blogsites and in the Facebook. She is believed to be from Rompin.
He had however sent SMSes to PKR leaders and supporters denying that he was caught for khalwat. He claimed that the woman had a family problem and sought his help.
He added that the woman’s husband had then arrived with some gangsters and accused him of hiding the wife.
“This is a case of a woman running away from her husband. They are going to get divorced. She had always wanted to run away from her husband. I advised them to return home. It’s a family problem…case settled,” he had said in his SMS.
It is learnt that the PKR leadership had asked him to leave the retreat. There are also calls made within the party to suspend him from all positions.
The leader is often seen as the religious scholar in the party and has been the PKR supreme council member since 2001. He also holds a senior position in Selangor PKR and in the Selangor Menteri Besar’s office.
He is married with two wives and has six children. He was once reported to have said that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was Imam Mahdi (Redeemer of Islam).
Jaip deputy director Mohd Ghazali Abdul Aziz confirmed the incident, saying that the PKR man and his partner were caught in the room at 3am by an enforcement team from the department.
Further investigations were ongoing, he told Bernama.

According to a report on Malaysiakini, there was no khalwat involved at all.
Reportedly, Badrul was at the hotel for the PKR leader’s retreat when the woman, whom he had been counselling previously, turned up with her child.
Excerpt from Malaysiakini:
“But, Badrul said in the statement, the husband later turned up with about 20 others and took the woman and her child away by force, physically assaulting him and accusing him of hiding away the man’s wife.
Saved by hotel security
He added that he was later saved by hotel security who stopped the men from beating him, but the men kept him in his room until a JAIP officer came to take him into custody as he was alone in his room.”
