Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim believes PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is capable of filling his position of head of government in Selangor.
“She (Wan Azizah) is qualified to be Selangor Menteri Besar,” Khalid is quoted as saying in a Sinar Harian report today.
However, Khalid (right) said, he did not want to speculate on who would be Selangor Menteri Besar should Pakatan retain the state after the next general election.
He explained that the decision of who would be Selangor menteri besar would require the endorsement of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
“We don’t want to speculate because this concerns the (state) palace and is therefore sensitive. Let us deal with the election first,” Khalid added.
There have been speculation that Wan Azizah may be appointed as menteri besar, after she revealed that she would be contesting a state seat in Selangor.
The former Permatang Pauh MP vacated her seat in August 2008 to allow her husband and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to contest there, and subsequently take the helm as parliamentary opposition leader.
According to Malaysian law, a candidate is barred from contesting for five years if the person vacated his or her seat.
While Azizah may not be able to contest a parliamentary seat in the coming general election, she is free to contest a state seat. – Mkini
