Kit Siang: Perkasa is 14th BN component party

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has described Perkasa as the 14th member of the BN coalition after it was revealed that the government had secretly funded the right wing organisation.

“The extremist and racist Perkasa is the unofficial 14th member of the Barisan Nasional coalition with greater heft and more influence than ‘7-11’ MCA and the other 12 BN component parties combined,” Lim (right) said in a statement today.

“7-11” is a convenience store franchise but has been used to mock MCA as it only won seven parliamentary seats and 11 state seats in the last general election.

Lim queried if Umno had obtained approval from its other component partners in the ruling coalition for the funding of Perkasa.

“Or… were they kept completely in the dark about the BN/Umno government’s secret funding of Perkasa,” he asked.

Lim said the government must disclose the details of the funding as it was public money.

He added that the government must also reveal if any other government agencies were involved in the funding aside from the National Security Council (MKN), the National Civics Department (BTN) and the Special Affairs Department (Jasa).

“The revelations about the secret government funding of Perkasa has raised numerous questions about the accountability, transparency, integrity and credibility of (Prime Minister) Najib Abdul Razak’s premiership as well as about his commitment and credentials as a moderate and to his 1Malaysia signature policy…
“…as Perkasa stands in total opposition to the 1Malaysia policy with its strident and unashamed Ketuanan Melayu stance,” he said.

Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali had on December 22 boasted that the right-wing movement could replace Umno, prompting an Umno leader to rebut that Perkasa had received “plenty of help” from Umno.

Following this, Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali (left) admitted receiving funds from government agencies such as MKN, BTN and Jasa.

The revelation led to a barrage of criticism against the government, including from BN partners. – Malaysiakini
