KUALA LUMPUR: Umno President Najib Razak blamed former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the recent hike on the Express Rail Link (ERL)
Speaking during the winding up of the Umno General Assembly 2015 at PWTC, Najib told Umno delegates the ERL agreement was signed in 1997 which prevented fare hikes for 14 years.
“I would describe the agreement signed with YTL as one-sided. The fare is only based on projected traffic and the agreement states that it must be increased every five years,
“When I became the Prime Minister, it did not increase for 14 years. But the compensation cost RM 2.9 billion,” he explained, alluding to YTL Corporation Berhad, a Malaysian infrastructure conglomerate.
However, Najib said that he accepted what was described as a “legacy problem” that existed since the Mahathir administration because he cared for the rakyat. – FMT
