KUALA LUMPUR: Irshad Manji, the Canadian author of the Home Ministry-banned book “Allah, Freedom and Love”, today announced her marriage to her partner, Laura Albano.
Irshad had announced her engagement to Albano on her online newsletter in 2015.
Today, she posted a photo of their wedding ceremony in Hawaii on her Facebook page.
“Just married! Photo album coming. But for now…Thank you for all your congrats, mabrouks (blessings) and good wishes. Laura and I have read every post. We’re deeply grateful,” Irshad wrote.
This came a few days after she had posted a photograph of her and Laura getting their marriage licence in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Irshad has been at the centre of much controversy for her publicly pro-LGBT stance as a self-avowed liberal Muslim and much recently in Malaysia for the Malay translation of her book “Allah, Freedom and Love”, which was banned for being contrary to Islamic law.
The Malaysian controversy saw publisher Mohd Ezra Zaid hauled up for trial in the Shariah Court for publishing the translation.
The Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department also took court action against Borders Store Manager Nik Raina Nik Abdul Aziz when they seized copies of Irshad’s book from Borders.
Albano is a medical tattoo artist at the UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, where she helps heal physical scars through medical tattooing. – FMT
