KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 ― Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was a “racist”, according to Penang Umno delegate Datuk Dr Shaik Hussein Mydin.

Speaking at the Umno general assembly today, he reminded attendees of Muhyiddin’s declaration in 2010 that he was “Malay first, Malaysian second” and questioned if the latter’s stance has changed since his cooperation with the DAP.

“I want to ask him, is he still Malay first or Malaysian first now? Please answer,” he said while debating the president’s policy speech at the Umno assembly today.

“He used to be so racist in all those years I knew him. (DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng) would cry if he heard the things he said. But now he is working with them,” he added.

Muhyiddin formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia after he was sacked from Umno, and later brought his party into the Pakatan Harapan opposition pact that includes DAP.

In 2010, Muhyiddin made the declaration in Parliament when challenged by DAP parliamentary leader to state his position on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia concept of racial inclusiveness.

He was accused of racism over the statement.
