KUALA LUMPUR: Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi has been placed under a US list which makes him a high-profile target for law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The United States Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed a sanction on the Malaysian Islamic State militant group leader in Syria. It has imposed the same sanction on Wanndy’s Indonesian comrade, Muhammad Bahrun Naik Anggih Tamtomo.

Wanndy has been sourcing funding and providing operational support for the terror group, apart from recruiting fighters.

Acording to a report in the New Straits Times, Wanndy is now wanted under the Specially Designated Global Terrorists list (SDGT), alongside the world’s most notorious terrorists.

Also on the list are Malaysians Yazid Sufaat and Zulkifli Hir. The latter is believed to have been killed by Philippine security forces in 2015.

SDGT lists individuals who have committed or pose a significant risk of committing acts of terrorism, or provided support to terror groups designated under OFAC Counter Terrorism Sanctions programmes.

The NST report said Wanndy and Bahrun had been added to the list for their involvement in funding and providing operational support for IS not only in their countries, but also channelling support to the group in Syria.

The men were among seven more people recently added to the list.

The report said Wanndy, who uses the nom de guerre Abu Hamzah Al-Fateh on Facebook, had ridiculed the sanction. However, he said he would be more cautious about his movements and communications.

Wanndy is also wanted by Malaysian police for his attempts to create unrest in Malaysia. Police say he had coordinated attacks and provided material support to IS fighters in Malaysia, including in launching a successful attack on the Movida nightclub in Puchong in June. – FMT
