PETALING JAYA: For the Opposition to have a realistic chance of winning GE14, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad must be persuaded to be the next prime minister, says Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
The former minister – who is now with DAP – said that Pakatan Harapan members must “swallow their pride” and “knock some sense into their heads” to select Dr Mahathir as their leader.
“Only a Tun Dr Mahathir versus (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib (Tun Razak) battle cry can energise the nation like no other. Only Tun M versus Najib can convince Malays especially Felda Malays, that changing an Umno government is feasible,” he said.
Zaid added that if this was not done, the Opposition would remain in the same position for many years to come.
“People forget that elections in this country are mainly decided by Felda Malays and those in rural areas. If you don’t address this issue, you will lose again,” he said in a blog post on Tuesday.
Zaid also said that the Pakatan Harapan alliance “does not inspire confidence” as it hasn’t even selected a candidate to be the next prime minister.
“Give Pribumi its fair share of seats, make Dr Mahathir our candidate for PM and make Umno members fight amongst themselves. That’s the only window we have to win,” he added.
Dr Mahathir has previously said that he will not contest in the next general election.
Zaid said that removing Umno from power required more than votes, as such a man like Dr Mahathir was needed to lead the new government.
