PUTRAJAYA must swiftly resolve Sarawak concerns over the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), with Kuching now engaging a private law firm on the matter, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said today.“The proposal to review the Malaysia Agreement is concerning,” Anwar said in a statement today.

“By referring the matter to a private UK law firm, it shows that the state government has little confidence in the ability of the state Attorney-General’s Chambers to give a free and fair interpretation of the law.”

Anwar did not name the firm. The PKR leader also urged Putrajaya and Prime Minister Najib Razak to “act immediately and to resolve the anxiety behind the MA63”.

“The government should not trivialise the matter because it has wide implications in terms of the relationship between the Federal government and the states, in particular, Sarawak and Sabah.

“Clearly, the record shows that he (Najib) and the BN government have failed to provide the appropriate levels of allocation and attention (to the Bornean states),” he said.

“The state’s rights within the framework of the Federal Constitution, in Sabah and Sarawak particularly, must be given serious and immediate attention.”

Sarawak Law, Federal-State Relations assistant minister Sharifah Hasidah will leave for London on July 16, where she will lead a legal team to retrieve documents from the British Library and National Archives in Kew, London.

  1. Ayah says:

UMNO’s arrogance re: Nazri Aziz’s behaviour and statements have become the last straw in Sarawak’s patience. Sarawak should teach UMNO and its ministers, especially Nazri, to behave like thugs.

  2. Ayah says:

Correction: ..not to behave like thugs.
